Samsung may launch Galaxy Note 5 this summer to beat the next iPhone

For all the ad bashing that Samsung does against Apple, the Korean electronics company is reportedly hoping to avoid direct confrontation with the next iPhone.

Samsung plans to launch its next Android-powered phablet — the rumored Galaxy Note 5 — earlier than usual, according to the Wall Street Journal. The report claims Samsung will launch the Galaxy Note 5 in mid-August instead of in the fall.

By launching earlier, Samsung will get “some breathing room”before Apple launches its next iPhone (the rumored iPhone 6S and 6S Plus). The launch of the Galaxy Note 4 and the Note Edge were so close to the launch of the iPhone 6 and6 Plus, Samsung may have lost millions of potential sales. Although the Galaxy S6 is its best smartphone yet, Samsung’s profits fell for the seventh straight quarter.

Samsung usually announces a new Galaxy Note at the IFA consumer electronics and appliances trade show held in September in Berlin, Germany.

The report makes no mention of the much-rumored Galaxy S6 Edge Plus that has leaked extensively in the last few weeks. Perhaps Samsung will announce that device at IFA instead.

The Galaxy Note 5 is rumored to have a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display with 2,560 x 1,440 resolution (QuadHD) and a 64-bit octa-core Exynos processor. Like the Galaxy S6’s glass and aluminum redesign, the Note 5 will reportedly get a glass back, too. The Note 5 will reportedly come in black, silver and white. Another new change: It may not have a microSD card slot for storage expansion.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus is rumored to also have a 5.7-inch QuadHD display with two curved edges (like the Galaxy S6 Edge), Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, 32GB of internal storage, 16-megapixel back camera and a 3,000 milliamp-hour battery.
