You don’t have to be in London to be keeping yourself up to speed on the 2012 Summer Olympic drama. Nowadays, volleyball and water polo enthusiasts can get their fill of what’s going on thanks to social media – namely, Twitter. Not only do athletes make use of the social network to flaunt photos, status updates and other information pertinent to their distance from the finish line; but fans use the network to carouse about the competitive flurry, too. This year, fans have even been noted to tweet 1st Place spoilers for those fixed on the tape-delayed coverage on their TVs during primetime.
THE STATS
• In just the first ten days of this year’s summer Olympics, there were about 25 million tweets having to do with the Olympics according to Mass Relevance, a social integration platform enabling producers and marketers to aggregate, filter, and integrate real-time social content into virtually any brand or media experience.
• The tweeting frenzy resulted in an approximate 2,00 tweets every 60 seconds with swimming the most talked-about event, followed by gymnastics, basketball, soccer and volleyball.
• Michael Phelps (Swimmer, America), took the lead when it came to tweets, with close to 575,000 mentions. Runners-up included LeBron James, (Basketball, America), Tom Daley, (Diving, UK), Usian Bolt (Running, Jamaica) and Kevin Durant (Basketball, America)
